Hi, my name is Caleb. I am a third year Creative Media Production major in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.  I am also working towards a minor in General Business in the Price College of Business. I am pursuing a focus in screenwriting in my major while still getting the basics of actual single camera productions.

Even though I am pursuing a focus in screenwriting, one of the coolest parts of being a CMP major at Gaylord is working on the set of short film productions. There is nothing that quite matches the atmosphere and feeling of being on even a tiny set and helping to contribute to the final product. My favorite class year was entirely this experience. The class was a pass/fail practicum in which I had to accrue a minimum number of hours working as crew on other students' short films. It was great! It was exhausting, but great!

My primary goals right now are just to build a small reel with my own productions and put together a small portfolio of decent scripts. The reel will naturally come from class assignments, if I do them well enough. However, the scripts I write in my classes are all very, very short and I don't think they will be a great representation of my writing abilities in the future. So, my biggest goal right now is to finish the first draft of a feature length screenplay before this time next year. Hopefully, that will give me enough time to revise it before graduation and head into the frightening world of film with a handful of short film scripts and a decent feature length script. Naturally, the big dream goal is to have a feature length film I write to end up playing in theaters around the world. Even if it absolutely tanks and I never get another shot, at least I got one.

I don't have a lot of time for hobbies. Work and classes take up pretty much all of my time. When I do have a little bit of time, I like to spend it watching movies or TV. Clearly, I have a pretty small set of interests. I try to also squeeze in some video games in there too. I usually try to play games that aren't super heavy on story or competitive in nature. Video games are my "turn off my brain" and relax hobby. If I could find the time and the drive to do it, I'd like to eventually pick up an instrument or two. The patience necessary for that art eludes me.

  1. Hi Caleb! Your introduction is excellent. I am impressed by your working and studying attitude. After read your experience, I thought that I need to be more diligent and dig my potential power. Besides, based on your busy schedule, highly recommend you to try a serene game called Spiritfarer in steam. Best wishes for you to achieve your big dream goal!

  2. Hi Caleb! I honestly can relate so much to your introduction! I love writing and I love movies and I've always dreamt of writing books that would become movies one day. (Maybe we can work something out in the future!) Being a lover of movies I've always dreamt of working behind the scenes and helping plan out how things are going to run on set, or doing something like that on a TV show. I totally understand not really having time for hobbies, but I want to encourage you to look more into it! College goes by so much more quickly than you think it does, don't let these amazing years pass you by because if you think you're too busy now, you're going to be so much more busy in the real world! Find things that make you happy! For me, reading and movies are my happy hobbies, or as you put it "turn off my brain" hobbies. You totally got this!

  3. Hi Caleb! Your introduction was extremely interesting - I am pursuing a business minor as well, and although I do not have the creative/artistic side you do, some of my friends are CMP majors. I agree with you on the instrument account ... I played piano and violin growing up, but I've always wanted to play the guitar. Additionally, although I still play piano for fun, I wish I had taken lessons longer so I could play more complicated pieces. Best of luck with this class and your career aspirations going forward!

  4. Hi Caleb! I think it's awesome that you want to work in film! It definitely seems scary. I applaud you for being brave and chasing your dreams though! I hope I get to watch a film written by you in theaters one day. :)
My favorite hobbies are also watching movies and TV shows. I love watching cringy romance movies. But I also love watching a good action movie too. It depends on what mood I'm in. I went through a phase where I watched a horror movie every night, but then get too scared to sleep after so I would have to watch a comedy movie after to help relax and calm my mind! :D

  5. Hey Caleb!
Thanks for sharing your major with us. I can tell you're very passionate and hard-working and that can get you almost anywhere! I definitely am not creative enough to get in to a field like that, plus presenting your work to other people can be scary! I completely relate on having hobbies that let your brain turn off. I'm on a pre-law track so once i'm done with my work, I just want to do nothing at all. Good luck with your work and have a great semester!

  6. It's always great to see Creative Media majors in this class, Caleb... especially with the focus in screenwriting. Excellent! You can use this class as a totally low-key, laid-back writing laboratory, playing around with different kinds of storytelling, screenwriting experiments, whatever you are inspired to do. As you've probably figured out, I am a huge fan of short fiction... and I've been thinking I would like to try some microscreenwriting, taking some fables and folktales and turning them into 100 words of DIALOGUE which could then be staged by kids in school: something that short is easier for little kids to memorize, and they could of course expand on all the dialogue as well, with the 100 words just as a starter. Anyway, that's a goal I have to experiment with this semester in the class (I enroll myself as a student in the class as well as being a teacher), and maybe you will try some microscreenwriting experiments too. I'm very curious to see what can be done with just a hundred words of dialogue! After all, sometimes a TV advertisement manages to tell a whole little microdrama with fewer words than that, so I'm guessing 100 words of dialogue could be enough for some real drama. That's the great thing about writing experiments: I can just try it out and see what happens. And with microexperiments, it doesn't take that much time just to try! :-)

  7. Hi Caleb!
I enjoyed going through your intro! I never heard about Creative Media major before, so you are the first one that i know. What an honor you have to work on the set of short films production. It must be fun! And i like that you set goals for yourself, that shows that you are a hard worker and that you know what you want in life. I hope you enjoy to the fullest those little free time that you have.

  8. Hi Caleb!
I enjoyed learning a little bit more about you! I am also in Gaylord College but I am an advertising student! I love how Gaylord offers so many different major paths and it's so interesting learning all about them! That is so cool how you are working on a series of short films! What are they about? Also do you hope to end up in Hollywood producing screenwriting after college? I feel like they would have lots of opportunities out there for that! Keep up the good work and I wish you the best with the rest of the semester!

  9. Hi Caleb,

I think it is so cool that you want to be a screenwriter. It sounds like the classes you are taking, including this one, will really help you with your dreams and passion which is really cool to me. I hope you are having a great semester and I wish you the best of luck in your future. I love the picture of Hollywood that you used for this and hopefully one day you will be there living your dreams!

  10. Hey Caleb, first I want to say that I wish you the best in the world of scripts and filming! It sounds extremely tough and tear-inducing, but from what you've said so far with the scripts you've wrote, even if they're short, and the productions you've been on it sounds like you're starting out really well! Also, I know we barely know each other, but if ever you drop a film I'll hype you up! We all need a good hype man, and everyone deserves a chance to do something they want to. If it ends up being a horror film too, even better!

  11. Hi Caleb,
Wow, your major and studies are so cool! I am a pre-med science geek, so I am so impressed by people who are naturally creative and pursue it! Great job! You are certainly dedicated to your work and skillset, and I admire you a lot for that. I would love to see a film of yours one day - we need to look for your name in the future on the big screen! I have had a few friends who were Gaylord ambassadors, and they loved it, so I hope that you're having a great experience.
    Sincerely,
    Rachel

  12. Hi Caleb,
It was nice to read a little bit about you. You seem like such a creative person and I can tell from reading about your hobbies and major, but also from your writing that I have read. I really enjoy Breath of the Wild. While it is a game that does revolve around story, it is an open world type game so I usually spend it climbing mountains and exploring or riding my horse around new villages. All that being said, I hope you are able to fully achieve your dream and will definitely be looking for your name in the movie credits!

  13. Hello, I think you major and the route you are wanting to go is so cool and interesting. The film world interests me, but I am nowhere near creative enough to pursue a career in that field. Although I have been and extra on a couple sets of movies and it was so much fun. Go Luck on your projects and hopefully you squeeze in some free time to relax.

  14. Hey Caleb, it is always nice to meet another Gaylord student. I am a Journalism student and know the struggles that can come from inside that building. I think it is so cool that you know exactly what you want to do with your life. Film is an awesome profession to go into and I hope that you make it where your want. Let's have a great semester!

  15. Hi Caleb! I love the explanation of your major! I feel like a know a few CMP majors, but I've never really understood just what went into the major. It sounds like a lot of work, but it's really cool that it's your absolute passion and that you have such a clear idea of what you want to do in life!

  16. Hey Caleb! Wow, it sounds like you have a lot going on in your life, but that you are truly pursuing your dream. It takes a lot of courage to pursue our desires, so for that I applaud you. After reading your intro, I would really encourage you to make some time in your life for true rest, even if that is just a few hours here and there. I really hope you finish your screenplay and good luck on the rest of your career!

  17. Caleb--
Your major and career path are insanely interesting!! I'm on the Health Sciences career path so I think we are pretty opposite but it was really cool getting to read about your world! I wish I could say I fully understood it, but that would be a lie. It sounds like you thoroughly enjoy working hard for your school and you enjoy the process as well. It's always so enjoyable reading about what a person enjoys doing. Good luck the rest of this semester!

  18. Hi Caleb!

I think it is super awesome that you are pursuing a CMP major. My roommate from freshman and sophomore year is also pursuing that. I have nothing but respect for that major because I have seen how hard it can be. Especially from the creative aspect. I struggle to even take a non shaky picture and yet there are people who can create masterpieces!

  19. Hey Caleb, loved reading about CMP! I used to be CMP until last month and changed to Professional Writing. I was really intrigued by what you said about screenwriting. While in CMP I wanted to take the screenwriting class so bad! I might still do it for a Gaylord elective. I hope your reel is coming along and that COVID hasn't made the shooting process too hard for you. Good luck on exams!

  20. Hi Caleb :)
I think that awesome you're a CMP major! I'm also in Gaylord as a PW (Professional Writing) major. Having read your storybook and a few of your weekly stories, it definitely comes through that you're a screenwriter, which is great! I'm not very familiarized with screenwriting or any of the CMP terms/lingo, but I can tell you seem to think in camera shots and scenes. You're really good at that, and it translates well into your writing. I would think about developing your storybook story into a script. I think that would be really fun to watch! I hope the rest of your semester and time at OU go well!
